Mounting photos on foam core board is a good way to display them for presentations. Other digital images can also be displayed this lightweight and durable manner.

Foam core board is a stiff, lightweight material for mounting and displaying images and posters. Since it is so stiff and thick, a computer printer can't print on it. Enlarging the photo and printing it, then mounting it onto foam core board is one way to create a poster for display. Those without access to a large format printer can order an enlargement done by a photo service.

Printing the Photo and Mounting it on Foam Core Board

  1. The first step is to print the photo using a color printer. The best results can be obtained by printing on sturdy paper with a glossy finish. Paper meant for printing brochures or photos is a good choice. A large format printer will produce larger prints than can be done on a regular printer. Another option would be ordering a poster-sized photo enlargement from a shop or service that produces digital photo prints, and mounting that on foam core board.
  2. Trimming the edges of the photo may be necessary. Then the back of the photo should be sprayed with spray adhesive. Or use self-adhesive foam core board can be used.
  3. The photo should be placed on the foam core board. Starting at one side, the photo should be pressed down; a rolling pin, if available, can be used to eliminate any air bubbles. Even pressure should be applied while the glue dries by stacking some books on it to hold it down. When it's dry, the edges of the foam core board can be trimmed with a sharp craft knife, if necessary.

Having a Photo Printing Service Print and Mount the Photo

  1. Mpix and MegaPrint are two online services that can do this. The UPS Store and Staples are bricks and mortar stores that also provide this service. Prices and other options such as size will vary and can be used as a criteria to help make the best choice.
  2. The photo needs to be uploaded if an online service is chosen. Both Staples and The UPS Store allow photos to be uploaded to their site, and also allow customers to bring the photo to the store on a CD or removable USB thumb drive. The best formats to use are JPEG or PNG, at the highest resolution available.
  3. Before the order is finalized, the customer is given a chance to preview the photo. If the order was placed on the Internet, it will be shipped to the customer. If t was ordered from Staples or The UPS Store, the customer will have to pick it up at their store.

Tips

  • Foam core board is stiffer and thicker than poster board, but it is still relatively flimsy and is not meant for anything of archival quality. For an image that will be displayed for many years, or one that will be moved around a lot, gatorboard is another mounting alternative. Gatorboard is a sturdier board with a longer lifespan, one that will hold up to more wear and tear than foam core board. It is more expensive, but may be worth the extra price depending on the purpose.

The Best Choice?

Mounting photos on foam core board is a time-consuming and tedious process. It is difficult to get the photo straight and keep bubbles from becoming trapped underneath. Those who don't have the time, space or patience to take on such a procedure should consider paying for a professional to perform this service for them. Those who have the time and experience can save some money by doing it themselves, but they may need a bit of practice before getting it right.
